MOTLHALERWA BEER

MADE THE TRADITIONAL WAY

Motlhalerwa Beer is inspired by the African bush and named after a Tswana Sub-clan of the mighty warrior king, HIS Majesty KGOSI GALESHEWE from South Africa. This Batswana clan calls themselves the (Mo) Batlhalerwa, which means “African wild-dog” when translated into English.

Given that the craft beer market in South Africa is growing at an alarming degree, the owner saw an opportunity to fill the gap between the new and expensive breweries and the big old established ones.

MY ROLE

A strong, well-structured packaging and website that stands out among its competitors, and also create a design concept for the brand product experience and an additional brand-building database.

THE SOLUTION

I designed an identity for the beer following the already well-established history and tradition of Motlhalerwa heritage.

The idea was to transfer the following artistic characteristics associated with the African continent; bold primary colours and a free hand like the illustration of Motlhalerwa (African wild dog).

My reason for a minimal approach to the illustration was to avoid visual hierarchy competition within the design, due to the bold colours and the long name of the beer. I, therefore, opted for the colours to imply importance, since the labels really needed to catch the eye on the shelves. So I chose strong bold colours as the background to identify each beer.
